Sun Anyone?

The negative effects of sunlight include the more frequent or earlier development of skin cancer and degenerative changes in the skin, and the occurrence ofphotodermatoses. - However, sunlight also has a favourable effects; specifically, it may inhibit the development and progression of diseases of the bones, muscles and skin, of various malignancies (carcinoma of the prostate, breast, colon and ovary, non-Hodgkin lymphoma), and may prevent certain autoimmune diseases, particularly multiple sclerosis. - This protective effect is ascribed to an increased synthesis of vitamin D, which is important for bone metabolism and is also able to regulate cell proliferation and differentiation, apoptosis, tumour invasion and angiogenesis.
- The possible consequence of this new information is that public information regarding exposure to sunlight must continue to include a warning against excessive exposure to the sun, while at the same time stimulating regular although limited sunbathing.

Serious Skin Care's best-selling A-Defiance line has just gotten better! When used as directed, this improved Age-Defiance line can help diminish the effects of premature aging, providing you with a more youthful look. What are peptides? Generally speaking, peptides are small fragments of proteins, short chains of amino acids (amino acids and proteins are key building blocks of most living tissues). Peptides are a big buzz in the skin care industry because of their ability to trick older skin into looking and acting younger.
The youthful effects we have seen on the skin from using peptides have been really exciting. There are hundreds of different peptides, some are natural, some synthetic, some custom made. We called on our team of skin experts to help navigate us through this world of peptides. Three different peptides were chosen and added to the core A-Defiance products at percentages the manufacturer's research showed to be effective. We chose an oligopeptide, a tetrapeptide and a hexapeptide. Each peptide has been independently studied by the manufacturers and shown in their reports to have positive cosmetic benefits to the skin's appearance. It helps protect skin from sunburn while charging your complexion with a mega-dose of moisturizers, antioxidants and 3 different peptides. Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines

UV or not to UV- That is the Question

We and others have shown that strict sun protection causes vitamin D deficiency in risk groups. In the light of new scientific findings that convincingly demonstrate an association of vitamin D deficiency with a variety of severe diseases including various cancers, the detection and treatment of vitamin D deficiency in sun-deprived risk groups is of high importance.

It has to be emphasized that in groups that are at high risk of developing vitamin D deficiency (e.g., nursing home residents or patients under immunosuppressive therapy), vitamin D status has to be monitored. Vitamin D deficiency should be treated, e.g., by giving vitamin D orally. Dermatologists and other clinicians have to recognize that there is convincing evidence that the protective effect of less intense solar UV radiation outweighs its mutagenic effects.
There is no doubt that solar ultraviolet (UV) exposure is the most important environmental risk factor for the development of non-melanoma skin cancer. Therefore, sun protection is of particular importance to prevent these malignancies, especially in risk groups.

However, 90% of all requisite vitamin D has to be formed in the skin through the action of the sun- a serious problem, for a connection between vitamin D deficiency and a broad variety of independent diseases including various types of cancer, bone diseases, autoimmune diseases, hypertension and cardiovascular disease has now been clearly indicated in a large number of epidemiologic and laboratory studies.

An important link that improved understanding of these new findings was the discovery that the biologically active vitamin D metabolite 1,25(OH)(2)D is not exclusively produced in the kidney, but in many other tissues such as prostate, colon, skin and osteoblasts.

"Instant face lift" chemical DMAE damages skin cells

Dr. Francois Marceau of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec (as told to Reuters Health) and his team tested 2-dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) in cultured rabbit and human skin cells. As the researchers predicted, applying the product caused a massive and rapid swelling of the cells as they filled with DMAE and water, leading to a thickening of the epidermal layer. They also found that DMAE was toxic to the skin cells, halting cell division, inhibiting secretion, and killing some cells after 24 hours of exposure.

Editors note: Isnt this what Dr Perricone is basing his famous skin care on ? or is it some other combination of letters?

This isnt a product I've done much with, but I would research it more. I did try an eye firming product with DMAE in and I liked the results. I didnt use it long term however. I switch my skin care by season & it was more of a summer product.
